Fourth World Journal

The Fourth World Journal (FWJ) is a subscription-based, peer-reviewed international journal published by the Center for World Indigenous Studies, USA. FWJ is a platform for international scholars and activists, and political and cultural leaders.

Published continuously since 1984, The FWJ has been a reliable, trusted, and respected source of contemporary Fourth World scholarship and commentary from around the world.

The journal publishes studies, commentaries, and analyses of the ideas, knowledge, and conditions of more than 5,000 Fourth World (Indigenous) Nations, representing over 1.9 billion people globally.

The journal publishes articles across a diverse range of fields, including:

Anthropology, communication and cross-cultural studies, demography, indigenous environmental sciences, food sovereignty, development governance, economics, education, ethics, geography, history, international relations, indigenous legal systems and law, linguistics, media studies, methodologies, philosophy, political science, population studies, psychology, public health, sociology, literature, visual and performing arts (music, theater, and dance), religious studies, and women’s/feminist studies.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Submission Overview:

Submissions may be articles, reports, essays, book reviews, or commentaries. Submitted articles cannot have been previously published, nor be forthcoming in an archival journal or book (print or electronic). Publication in a working­paper series does not constitute prior publication. By submitting material to the Fourth World Journal, the author stipulates that the material is not currently under review for another journal (electronic or print) and that they will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at the Fourth World Journal.

Submission Requirements:

  • Ensure manuscripts do not exceed 6,000 words (before references);
  • Convert manuscripts to Microsoft Word format;
  • Use 12-point Times or Times Roman with 1-inch margins;
  • Provide complete references formatted in APA 7th Edition  (for detailed guidance on formatting in­text citations and reference lists in APA style, see the Purdue Online Writing Center: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/index.html) ;
  • Provide photos and infographics as separate files, even if artwork is embedded in your document:
    • in .JPG, .PDF, .EPS or .PNG format
    • For large photos and graphics: 300 dpi at a minimum of 3 inches wide or 72 dpi at a minimum of 7 inches wide
    • For headshots: 300 dpi at a minimum of 1 inch wide, or 72 dpi at a minimum of 3 inches wide
  • Provide tables and graphs that are submitted in text form as separate files;
  • Provide your figure and photo captions in APA 7th Edition style.
  • Include a short biographical sketch of the author at the end of the manuscript with name, address, telephone, email address.

Peer Review Process:

Submissions undergo a double­blinded peer review process, which means that both the reviewer and author identities are concealed from the reviewers, and vice versa, throughout the review process.  The results of the review will be returned to the author with one of four responses: Enthusiastic, publish as is; Publish with minor revisions; Publish with major revisions; or Do not publish.

Submission Agreement:

Submission of a manuscript does not guarantee publication. The author understands that the Fourth World Journal will consider manuscripts, and the editorial board may agree to publish them contingent upon editorial adjustments. If the manuscript is approved for publication, it may appear in the next succeeding edition of the Fourth World Journal or a later edition. Publication will occur within 18 months of approval. Subsequent use of Fourth World Journal-published manuscripts in other publications must include the following citation:
